Visiting the United Kingdom?

Starting February 25, 2026, most travellers, including visa-exempt nationals (such as Canadians and Americans), must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the UK. The ETA is a mandatory digital document, costs £16 (~$30 CAD), and is valid for 2 years for multiple short visits.

Key details for 2026 travel:

  • Application: Apply online via the UK ETA app or GOV.UK website.
  • Requirements: Valid passport (must use the same passport for application and travel).
  • Enforcement: Without an approved ETA, you will be denied boarding or entry starting Feb 25, 2026.
  • Exceptions: British/Irish citizens, those with a valid UK visa, or those with legal residence in the UK do not need an ETA.
  • Transit: An ETA is required if you pass through UK border control, but not if you are transiting airside without passing through border control.

It is highly recommended to apply well in advance of travel.
