Leading the Industry

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

Our region of Columbia—Kootenay—Southern Rockies has always been built by hard-working people who understand the value of responsible resource development. From mining and forestry to energy and manufacturing, our local industries provide the good-paying jobs that support families, small businesses, and entire communities.

Mining, in particular, remains a cornerstone of our local economy. Operations across the Kootenays and Elk Valley support thousands of direct and indirect jobs — from equipment operators and tradespeople to engineers, environmental specialists, contractors, and local service providers. These are stable, family-supporting careers that allow people to live and work right here at home.

Our region is also playing a vital role in Canada’s future. The minerals produced here are essential for modern infrastructure and for the technologies that power a cleaner economy. Steelmaking coal from the Elk Valley supports the construction of bridges, hospitals, and public transit systems around the world. Meanwhile, critical minerals produced across Canada are key components in wind turbines, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and other renewable technologies.

Supporting our resource sector is not about choosing between jobs and the environment — it’s about doing both well. Local companies and workers have demonstrated that responsible development, strong environmental standards, and continuous innovation can go hand in hand. Our communities expect projects to be built and operated responsibly, and our workforce has the expertise to make that happen.

However, unnecessary delays, excessive red tape, and uncertain federal policies risk driving investment — and jobs — out of our region and out of Canada. At a time when global demand for responsibly sourced resources is growing, Canada should be leading, not falling behind.

I will continue to advocate for:

· Policies that support local jobs and economic growth

· Efficient and predictable project approvals

· Investment in skilled trades and workforce development

· Strong environmental standards that reflect local knowledge and innovation

· Ensuring Canada remains a reliable supplier of responsibly produced resources

When our resource sector succeeds, our communities succeed. Families have opportunities, young people can build careers close to home, and local businesses thrive.

Our region has the resources, the workforce, and the commitment to responsible development. With the right policies in place, Columbia–Kootenay–Southern Rockies can continue to lead in creating jobs, supporting renewable technologies, and strengthening Canada’s economy.

As always, I will continue to stand up for the workers, families, and industries that keep our region strong.
