King Charles III Coronation Medals
In May 2023, to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the Prime Minister announced the Government’s intention to award 30, 000 Coronation Medals to those “who have made significant contributions to the country, a province, territory, region or community, or an achievement abroad that brings benefit or honour to Canada.”
The King Charles III Coronation Medal is a way to recognize outstanding individuals of all ages and from all walks of life who have made a difference in their communities, provinces, territories or who have attained an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada.
Our shared sense of purpose as Canadians is strengthened when we collectively honour those who distinguish themselves by virtue of their talents, their generosity, and their service to their community and to our country.
Brent Bidston: Founded in 2019 by Brent, Angel Fight flies patients from East Kootenays to medical appointments in Kelowna, BC using 100 volunteer ensuring patients get needed medical attention without financial worries. He has helped thousands of patients and a grateful community.
Judy Dickson: For 60 years Judy volunteered at events preparing dinners for seniors and others. Volunteering and feeding attendees at community projects, and always the first to arrive and last to leave. Judy is a template for volunteers to follow and turned 80 years old on July 3, 2024.
Loree Duczek: Loree exemplifies excellence in crisis communications management. Her skilled, precise handling of emergencies ensures critical information flows, saves lives, and mitigates disasters. Unwavering dedication, professionalism, and tireless efforts in keeping communities informed and safe during the most challenging of circumstances.
Ian Ferguson: Ian served 41 years in the RCMP becoming Staff Sgt. Major. Ian served in Russia, Haiti, Afghanistan, and Edmonton RCMP. Taught over 25 courses for US Homeland Security in the United States, recognized NATO/UN expert on civil disobedience.
Grant Howie: Howie was Vancouver Police then transferred to Nelson Police before retiring in 2012. He is a huge part of charities such as Nelson Rotary Club. In 2000 he recruited 100 volunteers raising $160,000 building Lakeside Rotary Park. He is very involved in the Bighorn Sheep feeding program keeping sheep off the highway working BC Wildlife Federation.
Simon Howse: Simon’s vision and tireless efforts has breathed new life into the heart of his community. Through his innovative initiatives and steadfast commitment to service, he has fostered an environment that promotes economic growth, cultural vibrancy, and civic pride in the community.
Brian Huscroft: Brian is an avid volunteer focusing on wildlife: President – Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club, Barb wire removal preventing wildlife entanglement; feeding wildlife during heavy snowfall; Kokanee project, built dyke at Mawson Lake, coached minor hockey. Creston Valley Agricultural Society, Grain Growers Association, and East Kootenay Environmental Society.
Demetre Karountzos: Demetre had been volunteering for 50 years with: Shriners; Lions; Legion: Creston Rod and Gun Club; Fondo Banquets; and Catholic Church. Citizen of the Year for Creston Valley Rotary Club 2023. Creston Blossom Festival King of the Year 1988. (medal given posthumously)
Rosemarie Lowe: Rose takes pride in civic responsibility. She maintains a litter-free environment daily in her community. Picking up litter, recycles, and provides refunds from recycling back to Boswell community. A model of an active passionate community volunteer ensuring a clean environment.
Glen McDonald: For a century, McDonald Ranch and Lumber has been a pillar of excellence. The award celebrates 100 years of McDonald Ranch and Lumber’s outstanding achievements, their deep roots in the area, and Glen’s selfless contributions within their community.
Mark McKee: As a former mayor, Mark’s dedication to community service was unparalleled. Now focused on the Legion, he champions veteran support initiatives with leadership and compassion and, honouring their sacrifices. His tireless efforts ensure the Legion’s pillar of strength in the community.
Dr. Tracy Parnell: Dr. Parnell was inspired to go back to Ukraine by the tireless passion of doctors, and the indomitable spirit of the civilians. Anyone who is injured is given care. Dr. Parnell fundraises to provide the medical community with updated equipment.
Karin Penner: Almost 60 years ago, Karin founded the Cranbrook Youth Ambassador Program (Sweetheart of Sam Steele Program). Her volunteerism has influenced the lives of hundreds of young women providing inspiration and tools that they will use throughout their lives.
Hugh Stewart: Sgt. Major Hugh served RCMP 36 years. Co-founder BC-Wachee Metis Society. Started e-division (non-funded) for BC-RCMP who died in line of duty. Raised $250,000 for memorial. 20+ years of volunteering with disabled veterans. Enjoys coaching baseball and swimming. Senior Planner Olympic/Paralympic Games.
Dennis Walker: Dennis’ radio career began in hometown of Creston. 30 years in radio in the Okanagan where in 2015, he was named “Most Popular Radio-TV Personality.” His reputation is built on plain, old fashioned hard work and integrating within the community.
Jody Watts: Jody joined the military January 12, 1981, and retired May 31, 2013 with the rank of Master Bombardier, specializing in artillery. Jody was on the PMO team which travelled with Prime Minister Chretien. Jody specialized in battery neutralization for the DEU System (radar). He spent time looking after other soldiers who were released from the military, ensuring they were cared for and always able to be on call as needed.
Jason Wheeldon: Jason’s Citizen of the Year award reflects his immeasurable community impact. From funding school backpack meals, tirelessly volunteering, he is a shining example of one person’s kindness can create ripples of positivity that transform a community into a better place.
David Wilks: Upholding service above self, this exceptional leader transitioned from an illustrious RCMP career to federal politics as a Member of Parliament, advocating for the needs of his constituents. Now Sparwood’s Mayor, his unwavering commitment creates an inclusive, thriving community.
