Forest Task Force Expands

I want to update you on an important new initiative in our region. The Okanagan Forest Task Force has expanded into Cranbrook and the East Kootenay—and it’s a practical step toward addressing the growing issue of illegal dumping in our backcountry.

This is about protecting the land we all rely on.

Illegal dumping has become an increasing concern across our region. It damages our environment, threatens wildlife, and limits access to the forests and backroads that so many residents depend on for work and recreation. Too often, the cost of cleanup falls on local governments and, ultimately, taxpayers.

That’s why this expansion matters.

The Task Force, a non-profit run entirely on volunteers, has a proven track record of organizing volunteers to locate, report, and remove waste from remote areas. Bringing that model to Cranbrook and area will help keep our forests clean, safe, and accessible—while reinforcing that dumping on public land will not be tolerated.

How You Can Help

This effort is not just about organized cleanups—it also depends on community participation.

The Task Force offers a free mobile app, ‘OFTF’ (looks like logo bottom right) that allows you to:

· Report illegal dump sites using GPS location

· Upload photos of problem areas

· Help ensure cleanup efforts are directed where they are needed most

By using this tool, residents can play a direct role in protecting our environment and supporting this initiative.
